The 2 boat hire companies in Barbate

Hiring a boat in Barbate

Barbate has the only harbour between Sancti Petri and Tarifa, 35 km of Atlantic coast with no shelter, and its 3 rental companies are the base for seeing it from the water: the Breña cliffs and the Tajo tower to the west, towards Caños de Meca and Cape Trafalgar, about 5 miles; and to the east, Zahara de los Atunes and the beaches as far as Bolonia. There are day motorboats and a sailing boat. For more choice, Chiclana and the Bay of Cádiz to the north (40 km) or Sotogrande to the east.

The season runs from May to September. The levante rules here: when it blows, and it blows many days, nobody goes out; in a light poniente or a calm, it is one of the cleanest and emptiest coasts in Andalusia. There are scheduled boat trips to the Breña and Trafalgar for those who would rather not charter.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence to hire a boat in Barbate?

Not for a motorboat up to 5 metres and 15 hp, in daylight and near the coast; ask which companies have them. The sailing boat and the run to Trafalgar or Bolonia need an ICC or Spanish licence, or a skipper.

How much does a boat cost in Barbate?

A no-licence motorboat, €120–250 a day; a RIB with licence, €250–650; a sailing boat, €400–1,500 depending on whether it is skippered. Indicative high-season ranges; fuel and deposit are extra.

Where can I go from Barbate?

West under the Breña cliffs and the Tajo tower to Caños de Meca and Cape Trafalgar, about 5 miles, or east along Zahara beach to the Plata cliffs and Bolonia, about 10; open coast, so only in calm weather.

What about the levante in Barbate?

It is the east wind of the Strait and it blows hard for days at a time, often half the summer; on a levante day the harbour stays shut. Book on a poniente or calm forecast.

Are there boat trips in Barbate?

Yes, scheduled trips along the Breña cliffs to Trafalgar and the tuna-fishing grounds from the harbour. They are listed under the boat trips category.
