Asturias has 350 km of cliff coast and small harbours, and its boat rental is concentrated in one place: Gijón, with 16 of the region's 20 companies, at the marina in the old town. The rest are one or two companies in Ribadesella, Luanco (Gozón) and Luarca (Valdés), with motorboats and skippered trips from fishing harbours. The reason is the sea: the Cantabrian has swell almost all year, a tide of more than four metres and few shelters, and day boating happens where there is a big harbour and a bay, which is Gijón.
