The best time to hire a boat on each Spanish coast
On the Mediterranean the useful season runs from April or May to October, with the peak in demand and price in July and August; June and September are the months with the best balance of sea, price and crowds. In the Canaries you sail all year. On the Cantabrian and Galician coasts, June to September. Outside those months, many companies close.
1. The demand curve
Searches for boat hire in Spain are ten times higher in August than in January. Prices and availability follow that curve: in August the no-licence boats in the busiest destinations sell out; in November it is hard to find a company open outside the Canaries and the Costa del Sol.
What does not follow that curve is the sea. On much of the coast, the best weather for sailing is not August.

3. Month by month on the Mediterranean
- April and May: cold water (15–18 °C), calm sea, low-season prices. Good for sailing; so-so for swimming.
- June: the month with the best value. Water at 22 °C, empty coves on weekdays, prices 10–25% below August.
- July and August: peak demand, price and crowding in the coves. Book ahead. Strong thermal breezes in the afternoon along the whole Levante coast.
- September: the warmest water of the year (25–26 °C), fewer people, falling prices. Risk of levante storms in the second half, especially in Catalonia and the Balearics.
- October: still sailable in the Balearics, Alicante and Andalusia; the fleet starts to close.
- November to March: limited choice. Companies open on the Costa del Sol, in Alicante and a few in the Balearics for groups and one-off trips.
4. The Canaries: the exception
The only coast where rental works all year. The trade winds blow from the north-east nearly always, which leaves the south and west coasts of each island (Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, Puerto Rico, Playa Blanca, Morro Jable) sheltered. The north coasts have swell and little choice. Demand has two peaks: summer and Christmas.
5. How to choose the day
Three rules that hold on every coast:
- Look at the wind forecast, not the sunshine. In 15 knots a no-licence motorboat has a hard time; in 20, it should not go out.
- Leave early. In summer the breeze comes in at midday and builds through the afternoon. The morning is almost always better.
- Ask the company. They know the area and would rather change your day than rescue you. If they tell you not to go, do not go.
6. If you are coming from abroad
For visitors from northern Europe or North America the calendar shifts a little: May and October are warm enough for a day on the water even if the locals think the season is over, the Canaries are a genuine winter option with water above 19 °C, and Easter week and the first half of August are the two moments when Spanish domestic demand makes booking hardest. If your dates are fixed to school holidays in July and August, book the boat before the flights.
