Hiring a boat in Cartaya

El Rompido is the place on the Huelva coast where hiring a small boat makes the most sense: the village sits on the Piedras estuary, an arm of calm water more than 10 km long sheltered from the sea by the Flecha, a 12 km sand spit with a virgin beach you can only reach by water. Its 9 companies, two with no-licence boats and one with a skipper, work from the harbour and the estuary pontoons, with motorboats to cross to the Flecha, run up the estuary to El Terrón and, with the tide and a licence, go out to sea. Punta Umbría, 20 km away, and Lepe, 22 km, add 9 more companies.

The season runs from May to September. The estuary has tides of more than three metres and banks at low water; the companies tell you the good hours. There are scheduled boats to the Flecha for those who would rather not charter.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence to hire a boat in El Rompido?

Not for a motorboat up to 5 metres and 15 hp, in daylight and on the estuary: two companies advertise them and the Flecha is a few minutes across. Going out to sea needs an ICC or Spanish licence, or a skipper (one company).

How much does a boat cost in El Rompido?

A no-licence motorboat, €120–250 a day, often by the half day; a RIB with licence, €250–650; a skippered trip from €600. Indicative high-season ranges; fuel and deposit are extra.

Can I take a boat to the Flecha del Rompido?

Yes, it is the point: the spit is a few hundred metres across the estuary, with 12 km of dunes and empty beach on the seaward side. Land on the estuary side and walk over.

What should I know about the tide?

That it rises and falls over 3 m, the estuary has banks that dry at low water, and the mouth at El Portil has a bar; go out on the rising tide and follow the marked channel.

Are there scheduled boats to the Flecha?

Yes, a shuttle from El Rompido harbour across to the Flecha all day in summer. They are listed under the boat trips category.
