Hiring a boat in La Herradura
La Herradura is the nautical centre of the Granada coast: 14 of the province's 20 companies work from Marina del Este, a small harbour wedged between cliffs at Punta de la Mona, 4 km from Almuñécar. It is a varied fleet for a harbour its size: five companies advertise no-licence boats, three motor yachts, two jet skis, two skippered hire and there is a sailing boat and a catamaran. From the harbour you head west to the Cerro Gordo and Maro cliffs, a nature reserve with coves you cannot reach by land, or east to La Herradura bay and Almuñécar, all under 5 miles.
The season runs from April to October. The sierra shelters the coast from the north and the sea is usually calm in the morning; Punta de la Mona has one of the best seabeds on the Andalusian coast for snorkelling and diving. There are scheduled boat trips to the cliffs for those who would rather not charter.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to hire a boat in La Herradura?
Not for a motorboat up to 5 metres and 15 hp, in daylight and near the coast: five companies advertise them, the most on this coast. Yachts, the sailing boat and the catamaran need an ICC or Spanish licence, or a skipper (two companies).
How much does a boat cost in La Herradura?
A no-licence motorboat, €120–250 a day; a RIB with licence, €250–650; a motor yacht with skipper from €900; jet skis by the slot. Indicative high-season ranges; fuel and deposit are extra.
Where can I go from Marina del Este?
West under Punta de la Mona to the Cerro Gordo cliffs, Cantarriján and the Maro coves, under 4 miles; east across La Herradura bay to Almuñécar and the Peñón del Santo. Anchor in sand; the reserve is patrolled.
How do I get to Marina del Este?
By the N-340 coast road from Almuñécar or Nerja, turning off at Punta de la Mona; the marina is at the bottom of a steep road with limited parking, so arrive early in August.
