Hiring a boat in Santander

Santander has the most sheltered bay on the Cantabrian coast, 20 km² of protected water between the city, Pedreña and El Astillero, and the highest demand for boat rental in northern Spain. The fleet is spread round the bay: 2 companies in the city, at the Club Náutico and Puerto Chico, and another 10 on the southern shore, in Marina de Cudeyo (Pedreña, 6 companies and the largest marina), Camargo (Maliaño, 3, with the top-rated company in Cantabria) and El Astillero. There are day motorboats, sailing boats and skippered hire; no-licence boats are rare on the Cantabrian coast. Inside the bay you sail in any sea; outside, towards the Sardinero and Mouro island or Somo and Loredo, only in good weather.

The season runs from June to September. Outside the bay there is nearly always a swell; inside, a tide of more than four metres that uncovers banks and demands you follow the channel. It is one of the Spanish cities with the most demand for boat trips, with scheduled departures from the Los Reginas jetty.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Santander?

For sailing boats and bigger motorboats, an ICC or Spanish licence, or a skipper, which several bay companies offer. Motorboats up to 5 metres and 15 hp can be driven without a licence in daylight inside the bay; ask which company has them.

How much does a boat cost in Santander?

A RIB with licence, €250–650 a day; a sailing boat, €400–900 bareboat or €600–1,500 skippered. Indicative high-season ranges; fuel and deposit are extra.

Where can I sail from Santander?

Round the bay to Pedreña, El Astillero and the Puntal in any sea. Outside, to the Sardinero, Mouro island and Somo, only in good weather and with a licence or skipper.

Where do boats leave from?

From Puerto Chico and the Club Náutico in the city, or from the marinas at Pedreña (Marina de Cudeyo), Maliaño (Camargo) and El Astillero on the southern shore, 15 minutes away.

What should I know about the tide in Santander?

That it rises and falls more than four metres and uncovers sandbanks across half the bay. You sail the buoyed channels with the tide table, which the companies give you when you book.

Are there bay cruises?

Yes, and plenty: scheduled boats from Los Reginas to Pedreña and Somo. They are listed under the boat trips category.
