Hiring a boat in Barcelona
Barcelona is the biggest boat rental port on the Spanish mainland: 123 companies, more than Ibiza town. The base is Port Olímpic, with 51 companies within 500 m, followed by Marina Vela and the Nou Passeig de l'Escullera with 10 each, and Marina Port Vell, built for superyachts. It is a group market: 27 companies advertise sailing boats, 22 motor yachts and 17 catamarans, with two- to four-hour trips along the skyline and the beaches of Barceloneta and the Fòrum. No-licence boats are the exception (2 companies): for small day boats, Sitges and Castelldefels, with Port Ginesta, have more.
Fifteen companies advertise skippered hire, and that is the usual way out of the city given the traffic at the harbour mouth. The season runs from May to September; the garbí sea breeze comes in at midday in summer. There are also scheduled boat trips from Port Vell and Port Olímpic.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to hire a boat in Barcelona?
Most of the Barcelona fleet is skippered, so no. Bareboat sailing boats and RIBs need an ICC or a Spanish licence. Only two companies advertise no-licence motorboats (up to 5 m and 15 hp); Sitges and Castelldefels have more.
How much does it cost to hire a boat in Barcelona?
A sailing boat, €400–900 bareboat or €600–1,500 skippered; a catamaran, €1,000–2,500; a motor yacht with skipper from €900; a RIB with licence, €250–650. Indicative high-season ranges; fuel and deposit are extra.
Which marina do boats leave from?
Port Olímpic, next to the beaches, with 51 companies within 500 m; Marina Vela and the Escullera at the mouth of Port Vell, with 10 each; and Marina Port Vell for the biggest yachts.
Where do you sail from Barcelona?
Along the skyline past Barceloneta, the W hotel and the Fòrum, out towards the Maresme or south to the Llobregat delta; there are no coves, so trips anchor off the beaches. Sitges is about 20 miles.
Are there scheduled boat trips?
Yes, from Port Vell (Las Golondrinas) and Port Olímpic, with fixed departures along the waterfront. They are listed under the boat trips category.
