Hiring a boat in Foz

Foz sits at the mouth of the Masma, with the harbour on the ría and the beaches of A Rapadoira and Llas, halfway between Ribadeo and Burela; but the Google Maps register returns no boat rental companies based in the municipality. The nearest is in Ribadeo, 17 km away, with the only dedicated company in Lugo province, and from there the Foz coast and the Cathedrals beach, which lies between the two, is covered by sea in good weather. Ortigueira, 43 km, has another.

The season runs from June to September. The Ría de Foz is small, with a bar and a tide of more than four metres: you go in and out at high water. Outside, open Cantabrian with swell.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a boat in Foz?

Not from a company based in the municipality, according to the Google Maps register. The nearest is in Ribadeo, 17 km away; Ortigueira, 43 km, has another.

Do I need a licence?

To leave the ría for the coast, an ICC or Spanish licence, or a skipper. Motorboats up to 5 metres and 15 hp can be driven without a licence inside the Ría de Foz, in daylight and with the tide.

How much does a boat cost in the area?

A no-licence motorboat, €120–250 a day; a RIB with licence, €250–650. Indicative high-season ranges; fuel and deposit are extra.

Can I get to the Cathedrals from Foz?

By sea, with a licence or skipper and good weather: the beach is about 5 miles east, between Foz and Ribadeo, and from the water you see the arches at high tide.

What should I know about the Ría de Foz?

That it has a bar at the mouth and banks at low water: boats go in and out at high tide and along the buoyed channel.

What is there between Foz and Burela?

Ten kilometres of straight coast with the beaches of Llas, Peizás and Areoura and the port of Burela at the end; with no shelter in between, you sail harbour to harbour in good weather.

Why choose Foz over Ribadeo?

Only for the beaches: Foz has the wide sands of A Rapadoira and Llas, while Ribadeo has the boats. Hire in Ribadeo and, on a calm day, run west to Foz past the Cathedrals for a swim.
