Hiring a boat in Almería

Almería city has no boat rental companies with a fixed base in its harbour: the Google Maps register returns only a boatyard. The province's fleet is in three places. Aguadulce, in Roquetas de Mar, 24 km away, with 7 companies in the biggest marina in the province; Carboneras, 40 km away, with 10 companies and the northern way into the Cabo de Gata park; and Almerimar, in El Ejido, with its marina. Roquetas and Mojácar add a few more.

The destination of nearly every trip is the Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park: volcanic coves, clear water and an unbuilt coast between San José and Carboneras. From Aguadulce it is about 15 miles to the tip of the cape; from Carboneras, the northern coves (Los Muertos, Agua Amarga) are under 5. The season runs from April to October, and the levante rules: with an east wind the park closes.

Do I need a licence to hire a boat in Almeria?

Not for a motorboat up to 5 metres and 15 hp, in daylight and near the coast; ask in Aguadulce or Carboneras which companies have them. Cabo de Gata with a bigger boat needs an ICC or Spanish licence, or a skipper.

How much does it cost to hire a boat in Almeria?

Can I sail in the Cabo de Gata park?

Yes, but it is a marine reserve: anchoring only in the permitted zones, no approaching the cliffs, no fishing, and closed on a strong levante. Companies hand you the park chart with the boat.

Are there boat trips round Cabo de Gata?

Yes, scheduled boats from San José to Mónsul and Genoveses and from Carboneras to Los Muertos and Agua Amarga, among the most popular in Andalusia. They are listed under the boat trips category.
