Hiring a boat in Níjar
The Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park is the most sought-after coast in Almería for a day on the water, but it has no rental companies with a fixed base in the municipality of Níjar: San José has a harbour, but the Google Maps register returns no rental companies with an address there. The nearest are in Carboneras, 28 km by road at the park's northern edge, with 10 companies, and in Aguadulce, 36 km, with 7. From Carboneras, the Los Muertos and Agua Amarga coves are under 5 miles; from Aguadulce, the tip of the cape about 15.
What Cabo de Gata does have is an enormous demand for boat trips: scheduled departures from San José and Carboneras along the coves of Mónsul and Genoveses and the volcanic cliffs. For most visitors it is the practical way to see the park from the sea. The season runs from April to October; on a strong levante nobody goes out.

Frequently asked questions
Can I hire a boat in San José or Níjar?
Not from a company based there: none is registered in the municipality. Carboneras (10 companies, 28 km) and Aguadulce (7, 36 km) are the nearest bases; in San José, take a scheduled boat.
Do I need a licence to sail Cabo de Gata?
For the park's exposed coast, an ICC or Spanish licence or a skipper; a motorboat up to 5 metres and 15 hp can be driven without a licence in daylight near the coast, but the levante and the distances make that marginal here.
How much does it cost to hire a boat for Cabo de Gata?
A no-licence motorboat from Carboneras, €120–250 a day; a RIB with licence, €250–650; a skippered trip from €600; the scheduled boats by the seat. Indicative high-season ranges; fuel and deposit are extra.
Are there special rules in the park?
Yes: it is a marine reserve with anchoring only in the marked zones, a no-go band along the cliffs and reefs, no fishing and speed limits; the reserve is patrolled in summer and the companies hand you the chart.
Are there boat trips round Cabo de Gata?
Yes, and they are the main offer: scheduled boats from San José to Mónsul and Genoveses and from Carboneras to Los Muertos and Agua Amarga, several times a day. They are listed under the boat trips category.
