Hiring a boat in Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz is the resort town of northern Tenerife, with a fishing harbour and the Lago Martiánez pools on the seafront, but the Google Maps register returns no boat rental companies based in the municipality or anywhere in the north of the island. The reason is the sea: the north coast takes the trade winds and the Atlantic swell, with surf most of the year. The island's fleet is in the south, an hour down the motorway: Costa Adeje, with 34 companies, Los Cristianos, Las Galletas and Los Gigantes, with a calm sea all year and pilot whales offshore.
You can sail all year in the south. A few scheduled boats leave Puerto de la Cruz on calm days, but the water sport of the north is surfing.

Frequently asked questions
Can I hire a boat in Puerto de la Cruz?
No, there are no rental companies in the north of Tenerife. The nearest fleets are in Los Gigantes (8 companies, 50 minutes) and Costa Adeje (34, an hour) on the south coast.
Do I need a licence?
In the south, not for a motorboat up to 5 metres and 15 hp, in daylight and near the coast; bigger boats and whale trips with your own boat need an ICC or Spanish licence, or a skipper.
How much does a boat cost in Tenerife?
Indicatively, €120–250 a day for a no-licence motorboat, €250–650 for a RIB with licence and from €900 for a skippered motor yacht in the south. Fuel and deposit are extra.
Why is there no rental in the north of Tenerife?
Because the north coast faces the trade winds and the open Atlantic: swell and surf most days, few sheltered harbours, and nowhere to anchor. The south is in the lee of the Teide and flat.
Are there boat trips in Puerto de la Cruz?
A few scheduled trips leave the harbour on calm days; the whale-watching and catamaran cruises are in the south. They are listed under the boat trips category.
