Portbou is the last village on the Catalan coast before France, with the monumental railway station, the small cove and the Generalitat harbour below the cliffs, and it has no rental companies of its own: the 4 registered in its radius are in Banyuls-sur-Mer, 7 km north on the French Côte Vermeille, with motorboats and the top-rated with more than 40 reviews. On the Spanish side, Llançà, 7 km south, has 5 companies, and Cadaqués, 18 km, 12. From Banyuls or Llançà, the Portbou and Cerbère coast is covered in an hour, with stone coves between cliffs.

The season runs from May to September. It is the coast most exposed to the tramontana in all Catalonia: when it blows, nobody goes out; on calm days, the water is the cleanest in the Empordà.
