Hiring a boat in Ibiza
Ibiza town is where the island's big boats are: 51 of its 84 rental companies advertise motor yachts and 24 catamarans, and the fleet is split between Marina Ibiza, with 31 companies within 500 m, Botafoch on the breakwater and the commercial harbour below Dalt Vila. It is the natural starting point for Formentera, about 12 miles south, and for the coves of the south and east coasts. If you want a small day boat or a no-licence motorboat, there is far more choice in Sant Antoni de Portmany, 10 km away with 89 companies, and in Santa Eulària des Riu, 5 km away with 42.
Sixteen companies advertise skippered charter and eighteen have sailing boats. The season runs from April to October and many companies close from November to March; in July and August boats are booked weeks ahead and the best-known coves fill up before midday. There are also scheduled boat trips to Formentera if you would rather not charter.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to hire a boat in Ibiza?
Not for a motorboat up to 5 metres and 15 hp, used in daylight and close to the coast: four companies in town advertise them, and Sant Antoni has many more. Anything bigger needs an ICC or Spanish licence, or you hire a skipper (sixteen companies).
How much does it cost to hire a boat in Ibiza for a day?
A no-licence motorboat, €120–250; a RIB with licence, €250–650; a sailing boat, €400–1,500 depending on whether it is skippered; a catamaran, €1,000–2,500; a skippered motor yacht from €900, and well over €10,000 for the big ones. Indicative high-season ranges; fuel and deposit are extra.
Can I take a hire boat to Formentera?
Yes, it is the classic trip: Illetes is about 12 miles from the harbour across Es Freus, with a skipper or a licence. Anchoring is restricted over the posidonia meadows and the buoy fields fill early in August.
Where are the small no-licence boats?
In Sant Antoni de Portmany (89 companies, 10 km) and Santa Eulària des Riu (42, 5 km). Ibiza town is the yacht and catamaran harbour.
How far ahead should I book?
In July and August, weeks ahead for anything with a skipper and days ahead for small boats. In May, June and September a few days is usually enough.
Are there scheduled trips to Formentera?
Yes, from the harbour, with fixed departures and return times, and from Playa d'en Bossa and Figueretes. They are listed under the boat trips category.
