Hiring a boat in Mahón
Maó has more rental companies than anywhere else in Menorca, 48, spread along the 5 km of its natural harbour: Marina Port Mahón, at the head of the harbour, has 26 within 500 m, and the Port de Maó, on the Llevant quay and Cala Figuera, another 14. It is the most varied fleet on the island: twelve companies advertise skippered hire, six sailing boats, five motor yachts and four catamarans, and only one no-licence boats; for small motorboats, Ciutadella and Fornells have more. From the harbour mouth you head for Illa de l'Aire and the south-east coves (Binibèquer, Es Canutells, Cala en Porter), under 8 miles, or north to Es Grau and the Albufera reserve.
The season runs from April to October. Mahón harbour is navigable in any wind; outside, with the tramontana, the north coast closes and everyone sails the south. There are scheduled boat trips round the harbour and to the coves for those who would rather not charter.
