Sailing in Mallorca
Mallorca has the largest boat rental fleet in Spain: 461 companies, against 131 in Menorca and 84 in Ibiza town. The island is 45 minutes from Palma airport to almost any harbour, and the offer splits into two very different coasts. The bay of Palma and the Calvià shore to the west (Portals Nous, Santa Ponça, Port Adriano) hold the yachts and skippered charters: Palma alone lists 132 companies, Portals Nous 42, Andratx 33 and Santa Ponça 29. The north and east (Port d'Alcúdia with 38, Cala d'Or with 35, Port de Pollença, Cala Rajada, Port de Sóller) are where you find day boats, RIBs and no-licence motorboats for the beaches of Alcúdia bay, Formentor, the Santanyí coves and the Tramuntana coast.
Across the island, 82 companies advertise yachts, 53 skippered hire, 45 sailing boats and 40 boats you can drive without a licence. The season runs April to October and many companies close from November to March; in July and August boats are booked weeks ahead. There are also boat trips with fixed timetables if you would rather not take the helm.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Mallorca?
Not for a motorboat up to 5 metres and 15 hp used in daylight near the coast: 40 companies on the island advertise these. Anything bigger needs an ICC or Spanish licence, or you hire a skipper. Skippered charters need nothing from you.
Which harbour should I rent from?
For Formentor and the north coast, Port d'Alcúdia or Port de Pollença. For the Tramuntana cliffs, Port de Sóller or Andratx. For yachts and the Calvià coast, Palma, Portals or Port Adriano. For the south-east coves, Cala d'Or or Portocolom.
How much does a day on a boat in Mallorca cost?
Indicatively €120–250 for a no-licence motorboat, €400–1,500 for a sailing yacht depending on whether you take a skipper, and €900–4,000 for a skippered motor yacht. Fuel and deposit are extra.
Can I rent a boat in winter?
Some companies in Palma and Port Adriano stay open all year, but most of the island's fleet closes from November to March. Check by phone before travelling.
Are there boat trips if I do not want to rent?
Yes. Many harbours run catamaran and glass-bottom boat trips with fixed timetables, especially Alcúdia, Palma and Cala Rajada. They are listed under the boat trips category on each harbour page.
